My Dear Wife-
Still no news from you –
I received, yesterday, a letter from Miss Emma J D- the family are well-
Tom Owens died from wounds soon after the Gettysburg battle.
I have a nice picture book for son when I come- Tell him to be a good boy,  & mind Mother.  Don’t cut his hair until I come.  Learn him his letters – He is old enough now for that, & soon he can read the little book I will bring him.  I will bring him something else if I can – I write but little hoping it will be allowed to go through Give my love to all
            Your devoted husband
